Working under the guidance of the Plant Pathologist this role is focused on establishing and managing the beet leaf hopper insectary at the Nyssa, OR glasshouse facility.
You will be a part of a team dedicated to contributing new knowledge to sugarbeet growers in Southern Idaho to enable them to improve their sugarbeet productivity, profitability, and sustainability.
The role is ideally suited to someone who has a background in entomology, insect rearing and greenhouse management as well as an eye for detail, enjoys greenhouse work, and has an inquisitive mind.
Based in Nyssa, OR.
this position is with Amalgamated Sugar's Sugarbeet Research (SBR) Team.
This position is an on-site position and relocation assistance is not provided.

Responsibilities:
Maintain and increase existing beet leaf hopper populations Ensure healthy, viruliferous containing the Beet Curly Top Virus hopper colonies Manage all aspects of pest control, including but not limited to the control of powdery mildew, two spotter spider mites, aphids Continuously supply sugarbeet feeder plants for hopper colonies Provide sufficient hopper colonies for the Nampa and Paul Curly Top Nurseries, number of needed colonies will depend on planted replications Provide sufficient hopper colonies to carry over into the next season Maintain all required records by Oregon Department of Agriculture Ensure all needed supplies are available and on hand, include reordering, stocking, etc.
Supervision of seasonal staff as required Simple maintenance and repair of greenhouse facilities and equipment, including but not limited to lights, fans, cooling system, irrigation system Schedule of annual maintenance with 3rd parties Assist the weed scientist, plant pathologist, and Ag technician with trials and research projects Day to day management of field trials and experiments including weed spraying, insect and disease spraying, irrigation, and crop scouting Collecting research trial data including evaluation of disease severity and weed counts Assist with harvesting and data collection at harvest Data entry, organizing and formatting using Microsoft Excel Road transport of research and farm equipment (loading, hauling and unloading) Ensure fieldwork is being conducted in a safe manner and contribute to improvements in safe work practices Other responsibilities as assigned by the immediate supervisor or senior Ag manager Essential Skills:
Skill in greenhouse management Skill in rearing insects and maintenance of insect colonies Skill in plant production Idaho / Oregon State driver's license A current Oregon State Pesticide Applicators license including Demonstration and Research Qualification - or willingness to obtain one within 6 months of employment An eye for detail and the ability to strictly adhere to research protocols and methodologies Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint software applications Well-organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks/projects effectively A commitment to workplace safety including a proactive approach to safe work practices and hazard reporting Not afraid of manual labor or of working inside / outside in very hot or cold conditions Able to travel out of town for work, including occasional overnight stays The ability to work under pressure at times while maintaining an even temperament Personal integrity and a desire to produce high-quality work Foster an environment that encourages teamwork and collaboration, both internally and externally
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree with an emphasis in agronomy, soil, or plant science is prefered Knowledge of greenhouse management or insect rearing is strongly desirable Preferred 2-4 years of work-related experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
